Why is the Inspection so Important?
How important is a chimney inspection, really? It is very important according to the Chimney Institute of America (CSIA) and National Fire Institute (NFI). It is especially true if you use your fireplace on a regular basis in the fall and winter. The more often you use your fireplace, the faster and quicker the creosote builds up in your system.
Creosote is a thick, black or brown crusty or gunky material that coats the interior of your chimney, and it is extremely flammable. Even as little as an eighth of an inch of it is enough to catch an ember and start a chimney fire. Another cause of creosote build is the moisture level in the wood you use in your fireplace. If your wood hasn’t been cured as long as necessary, the smoke that is produced will have too much moisture, which will cause creosote faster in your system.
What does Creosote mean For You?
Not only will we be looking for creosote buildup when we inspect your chimneys, but we’ll also be looking for damage that have occurred over the course of the year. Little repair jobs can turn into big repair jobs if left untreated, and this only means more money out of your pocket. But that’s not the worst part of it. When speaking of your chimney and fireplace system, damage also can cause dangerous gases to leak into your home instead of being directed up and out of your chimney and house.
